Gary Stebnitz, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 87, surrounded by family. Gary lived a life full of love, laughter, and meaningful connections, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Gary was admired for his infectious sense of humor and exceptional joke-telling skills. He had a gift for connecting with people and, throughout his life, generously shared his talent, bringing laughter and joy to others.
Music and reading were at the heart of Gary's life. A natural musician, he would sit at the piano with his kids and sing through Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and all the standards with ease.
Gary had a special fondness for British comedies, mysteries and Masterpiece Theater on PBS. His nights were often spent staying up late, captivated by radio programs or audiobooks, losing himself in stories that sparked his imagination.
A respected real estate broker in Dane County for over 40 years, Gary built a successful career alongside his beloved son Andy, with whom he shared a special bond. Many clients and associates consistently highlight his strong commitment to ethics and integrity. His contributions to the real estate community were far-reaching, serving on various boards and committees, including the Wisconsin Broker Examination Preparation Committees, the Realtor Association’s Arbitration Board, and the Madison Energy Conservation Committee. His community service included chairing the West Madison Senior Coalition, serving as a board member for the Madison Community Service Center, and being a member of the State of Wisconsin Advisory Board on Aging.
Gary’s commitment to service extended beyond his professional life. He was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church for over 60 years, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, church council chair, and congregational president.
A dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge, he achieved the rank of 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and served as Past Master of Commonwealth Masonic Lodge in Madison.
Gary was predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Nellie, his brother Dean, sister Kathleen, niece and nephew Carol and Bill, three grandnieces, his in-laws, and his brother-in-law Floyd “Mike”, as well as his beloved son, Andy, and is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Georgie, their three children, and four grandchildren, who were the lights of his life. Gary inspired his children with kindness, wisdom, integrity, and unwavering dedication to family and community.
A private service will be held for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Gary’s memory to St. John’s Lutheran Church, PBS or a charity of your choice.
Rest in peace, Gary. Your love, laughter, and wisdom will forever be cherished by all who knew you.
