Larry Deitch

April 27, 1950 — May 18, 2020

Madison/New Jersey - Larry S. Deitch, a kind and gentle soul adored by all who knew him, died peacefully after a sudden and brief illness on Monday, May 18, 2020 surrounded by family in his daughter’s home in Madison, WI. He was 70 years old.

Larry was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 27, 1950 to loving parents Faye (Friedman) and Edward Deitch. He attended the Art Students League of New York and was a dedicated artist, admired for his drawing and photography. Larry worked as the art director for Carsten’s Publications in Fredon, NJ and more recently, until his illness, was a beloved special education teacher at Phillipsburg High School in Warren County, NJ.

Overflowing with kindness and generosity, Larry was a dedicated husband, father, son, brother and uncle, who cherished his role as zeida (grandfather) to his two grandchildren. He was an avid reader – including three newspapers each day – and a lover of music, good food, conversation, and baseball. Larry also loved the outdoors and cities and was a world traveler who had many adventures.

A respected figure in the arts and political-activist communities wherever he lived, Larry had countless friends, worked for just causes, loved gardening, and made the world a better place.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Stephenson; his daughter, Aphra Mednick (Adam); grandchildren, Eliza and Simon Mednick; sister, Joan (Michael) Levy; nephews, Andrew and Rodney (Kelly) Levy; and numerous cousins, grand-nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Lee Deitch.

Larry’s family is grateful for the care he received by the staff at St. Luke’s Hospital in Phillipsburg, NJ, and the UW Carbone Cancer Center and Agrace Hospice in Madison, WI.

May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.
