Helen Doubleday

August 13, 1920 — May 10, 2022

Sun Prairie

Born Helen Ruth Long to Orrin and Frieda, she was raised in rural Elwood, Illinois.  She graduated from Joliet Township High School and received her RN from Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, Illinois.

Mom and her best friend, Susan Henderlie, enlisted in the Navy and as nurses were stationed on Guam.  After returning home, Mom married her high school sweetheart Donald B. Doubleday.

Mom was the first female to receive her airplane flying certificate in Joliet, Will County, Ill.  During her license exam, she did have to make several passes before landing successfully.  Her only brother, Orrin, reportedly came to the airport to witness the event.

Mom and Dad raised their family with love and compassion.  Teaching us self-respect and respect for others. They opened our family to a foster child until her adoption a year later.

Mom had a great devotion to her family, friends, God, and country and was rewarded in kind.  We will hold her in our hearts, never to be forgotten.

Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband Donald.  She is survived by two daughters: Nancy Schmidt and Kay Moratz; grandchildren: Katherine Wessel, Michael (Jenee) Moratz and Gregory Moratz; great-grandchildren: Emerich, Marnice, Kendrick, and Aldrick Moratz; nephew Orrin (Margaret) Long III; niece Laurie Long-Thompson; great-nieces Holly, Karen and Helen; great-nephew Andy and their families.

We would like to thank the Sun Prairie Healthcare Center for their care during the last years of her life.

If you would like to make a donation in honor of this wonderful woman, the family of Helen Doubleday request any memorials be donated to the charity of your choice.

Per her wishes, no services will be held for Helen.
