Daniel Klopp

June 18, 1976 — August 1, 2020

Daniel Robert Klopp, 44, of Madison, Wisconsin, passed away on August 1, 2020. Daniel was born on June 18, 1976, in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin to James and Susan (Christy) Klopp of Erie, Colorado. He is survived by his brothers Andrew (Katya) and Jeremy; a niece, Caitlyn; nephews, Alan and Evan; an uncle, aunts, many cousins and wonderful friends.  As rescued dogs, Annie, Joe, and Sophie owed their second chance for a life filled with love to Dan.

Dan was active in Boy Scouts as a youth and as a young adult, having achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and the Vigil Honor of the Order of the Arrow. He enjoyed camping, canoeing, and high adventure, and was a camp staff member from 1991 to 1994 at Camp Long Lake in Dundee, Wisconsin. He is remembered for his commitment to service and to youth through scouting--and for all the fun and laughs he brought to camp.

Dan graduated from Arrowhead High School in Hartland, Wisconsin, in 1994, then earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1998 from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he studied film and photography. His experimental and documentary photographs and films have been shown in gallery spaces and theatres in Milwaukee and elsewhere, and his art has been honored by awards from the Mary L. Nohl Artist Fellowship and a Wisconsin Arts Board Fellowship. He was known for his powerful pinhole camera portraits and his creative portrait and documentary photography. Dan loved and sought to understand every kind of cutting-edge cinema, art, literature, and music. Dan was a percussionist and student of eclectic genres of music.

Dan had a wide-ranging career, which included being the Program Manager of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Cinema, a Research Videographer at the Wisconsin Center for Education Research, and a freelance documentary filmmaker and photographer. Under the brand of his production company Keyhole Films, Dan worked with a great variety of corporate clients, journalists, and other artists, and he obtained many cinematography and other credits throughout his career.

His family and friends will forever remember Dan living his life with fullness and curiosity.

“It’s better to have something to remember than anything to regret.”  Frank Zappa

Instead of flowers or monetary donations, Dan would want you to express your love to those people in your life whom you value. A private service will take place at a later date.
