Madison-Charles Lee Suggs Sr., age 69 passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, June 12, 2022. Charles was born on October 8, 1952, in Shelby, Mississippi to his mother Emma Lee Turner Suggs (whom he loved with all his heart) and his father Oscar Lee Anderson. Charles attended Paseo High School in Kansas City, MO, then enlisted in the Army in 1971. While in the Army Charles was granted several badges - an expert at hand grenades, marksman (M-16 rifle), first class (81mm mortar), a national defense service medal, and a good condition medal. Charles loved fishing, barbecuing, traveling, and watching sports. Charles loved his family unconditionally and spent as much time with them as possible - always quick to laugh and lend a hand and happy to sit and chat about anything. Charles also always supported his grandchildren by attending school events, sporting events, and celebrating their accomplishments. Charles' unwavering love and support to all earned him the affectionate name the “Grandpa of Basketball”.

Charles met the love of his life, Karen while they were working at the bank. They later wed on August 6th, 1977 and remained happily married for 36 years until her passing. His mother Emma Lee Suggs Turner, his father Oscar Lee Anderson, his wife Karen Laverne Suggs and his daughter Toria Suggs all preceded him in death .Charles is survived by his children: Ronnell (Junnie), Charneese (Phillip), Benitha, Charles Jr., Myron Sr., Oscar (Elane), Sylvia, Tiffany, Kareem (Amanda); a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; Brother-Troy; Aunt-Vannie; Sister-in-law Ann; and many more relatives adopted by love, all of whom he was lucky enough to love, hug, and hold in his final days. Charles was a father figure to all of his children’s friends and family. As the “Grandpa of Basketball”, he spent many hours sharing his support, guidance, inspiration, and love. He will be deeply missed by all.

A visitation for Charles will be held on Friday, June 24 at CHRIST THE SOLID ROCK BAPTIST CHURCH, 4200 Buckeye Rd., Madison, from 11 am until the time of the funeral service at 1 pm.   Interment to follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
