Yuri M. Shkel

Yuri Shkel, age 61, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 28, 2023, at the UW-Hospital in Madison. Yuri was born on October 6, 1961 in Chelyabinsk, Russia. He married his wife Irina in 1982 in Moscow, Russia and came to the United States, together with his family, in 1994.
 
Yuri has spent his professional life immersed in academics and science. He obtained a PhD in Mechanics and Mathematics from Lomonosov Moscow State University, worked as a professor in Belarus and at UW-Madison, and founded a materials research company CoMMet LLC. He also had many hobbies -- including marksmanship and skiing -- and was well-known in his Fitchburg neighborhood among the daily dog walkers. With any activity that Yuri approached, he was creative, unapologetically unconventional, and fiercely independent.

 
Yuri is survived by his wife Irina, daughter Yanina, brother Andrei, parents Margarita and Michael, and a well-trained dog Tyoma.
 
A Celebration of Yuri's Life will take place on Wednesday, August 2 at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison at 1 pm. A small luncheon will follow the service at the same location.
