Madison - William "Bill" Paul Nigbor passed away March 18, 2016 at Agrace Hospice Center. He was the son of Paul Peter and Evelyn Theresa (Lange) Nigbor, born August 12, 1928 in Winona, MN. He graduated from Tomah High School in 1946 where he played football for a team that was undefeated for four years! In his senior year, he was named a Wisconsin All State End. He also participated in the sports of Track and Boxing, and he had a good singing voice.
He enlisted in the Army, June of 1946, and after basic training, served for two years in Japan in the Army of Occupation. He is considered a World War II Veteran. He married Frances Leone Pedersen of Warrens, WI on May 2, 1953, and they had three children. After her death in 1993, he married Joyce Irene McConkey on May 15, 1999.
While in the VA, he served in Administrative positions at Tomah, WI; Cheyenne, WY; Kansas City, MO; St. Louis, MO; and Marion, IL before he transferred to Madison, WI in March of 1974. He retired from the VA in 1989 with 43 years of federal service. Later he had a part-time position as a courier for a local travel agency for 20 years.
Bill enjoyed playing golf for many years, and after joining Sports for Active Seniors (SAS) he continued playing golf, but also added biking and canoeing. For many years, he enjoyed going to UW Football games, watching the UW Basketball team on TV, and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Irene; his three children, Kurt William, Karl Paul and Sara Claire (Erin Lynch) Nigbor; two step-children, Natalie Lynn Killingstad (Tom) Zieziul, and Marc Jon (Julie) Killingstad; a sister, Doris Marie (Richard) Hobson; a niece, Deborah Hobson (Jim) Sheppard; a nephew, Steven (Kim) Hobson, granddaughter, Kirsten Marie (Scott) Dieckhoff; a niece, Jan Sweeney; two nephews, Tim and Mark Sweeney; a sister-in-law, Janice Elaine Bosman; a brother-in-law, Milt (Beverly) Pedersen; two nephews, Evan (Dawn) Pedersen and Erik (Cheryl) Pederson and a great-grandson, Mason Scott Dieckhoff. He was a gentle soul, who loved his family. He also was a wonderful, faithful husband.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his first wife, Frances.
Family and friends may visit at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Rd, Madison on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 from 4 p.m. - 7p.m. A Memorial Service will be held beginning at 11 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, 312 Wisconsin Ave, Madison, on Wednesday, March 23, 2016. There will be no visitation at church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Wisconsin Historical Society.
