William Francis Komarek

William (Bill) Francis Komarek, age 74, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 9, 2023 surrounded by his family at UW Hospital. He was born on February 5, 1949, in Dodgeville, WI to Willard and Verona Komarek. 

He graduated from Iowa Grant High School in 1967. He received his associate’s degree in accounting from MATC in 1969. It was at an apartment complex in Madison, WI where he met his future wife, Catherine Ward.  They were married on February 20, 1971, in Boscobel, WI.  In 1977 they moved to Sun Prairie, WI where Bill lived with his wife until his passing. He always cherished the memories made from our family neighborhood.

Bill spent his entire career with the State of Wisconsin.  He retired in 2005 at the Department of Workforce Development as the Human Resources Director.  He missed his time at the State so much that he continued to be a Limited Term Employee for several years after his retirement. In his free time, Bill enjoyed golfing where he once scored a hole-in-one at his beloved golf course, Yahara Hills. However, his favorite moments were those spending quality time with his grandchildren and attending their school/sports activities.  He was a devoted Badger (especially men’s basketball), Bucks and Packer fan.  

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Catherine; two daughters, Amy (Jeff) Metzler, Angela (Jared) Handel; three grandchildren, Jared Jacoby (Prestyn), Emma Handel and Owen Handel; step-grandchild Branden Metzler. He is also survived by his siblings Larry (Doreen) Komarek, Jan (Tom) Benzinger and Jill Komarek (Travis); sister-in-law Karen (Dave) Gehrke and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Verona Komarek; in-laws Darrel and Pearl Ward.

Visitation will be held at Cress Funeral Home, 1310 Emerald Terrace, Sun Prairie, WI at 11 am on Saturday, December 16, 2023 until the time of the service. A celebration of life will be held at 1 pm with Father Bill Nolan presiding.
