William Cudlipp

MADISON
William Samuel Cudlipp III, of Madison, WI, passed away on November 21, 2016, two days after celebrating his 76th birthday. Bill died after a brief illness at Meriter Hospital in Madison. He was born in Richmond, VA, on November 19, 1940, the son of William Samuel Cudlipp Jr. and Ruth Yeamans Cudlipp. Bill was a brilliant student, earning a BA in Spanish from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in 1962 and an MA and PhD in Spanish at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1963 and 1974, respectively. He was an esteemed Spanish professor first at the University of Richmond and from 1980 until his retirement in 2011 at the UW-Madison. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his only sister, Katherine, of Washington, D.C. Bill had a lifelong passion for classical music and was an accomplished piano player. He was a beloved presence in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese for decades, even after retirement. Gentle, sharp, and with a great sense of humor, he touched the lives of many people inside and outside of our classrooms. We will sorely miss his grace, his wit and his warmth. Arrangements have been made to transfer his remains to Richmond, VA, where his ashes will be interred next to his parents' tomb in Riverview Cemetery. The Department will start planning a celebration of Bill's life that will take place in the near future.
