Vito Di Piazza, of Madison, Wisconsin, age 96, passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2013.
He was born on August 20, 1917, in Chicago, Il, the son of Pietro and Rosalia (Mustachia) Di Piazza, originally from Sicily. At the age of 2 Vito and his family moved to San Cipirello, Sicily after his mother passed away. Vito was a WWII veteran and served in the Italian Army. Vito met and soon after wed Paola (Caruso) Di Piazza, they were married on June 5, 1949 in Giardinello, Sicily. In 1958 Vito and Paola moved their family from Sicily to Madison, Wisconsin. He worked 23 years for the City of Madison, retiring in 1982, and has been an active member of the Italian Workmen's Club since 1960. In his earlier days you could always see him cooking Italian sausage at many Italian festivals. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, making wine and Italian sausage and cooking wonderful Italian food from his bountiful garden. For many years his pride and joy was his fig tree which he meticulously cared for each fall to prepare it for the harsh Wisconsin winters.
Vito is survived by his wife Paola Di Piazza, his children Peter Di Piazza, Rosalie Hunt (Tim) and Anna Maria Di Piazza, his Sister Rosalia Rondazzo of Sicily, grandchildren Shannon, Vito, Catherine, Russell, Edward, David, Devon, and Tiegon, great grandchildren Vito and Dominic, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Mass of CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 28, 2013, at GOOD SHEPHERD CATHOLIC PARISH AT ST. JAMES CHURCH, 1204 St. James Ct. Madison, with Msgr. Tom Baxter presiding. A visitation will precede the mass at 9:30 a.m.
