Virginia (Ginny) Olson Hanson, passed away peacefully at the age of 90, on December 29, 2025, at Skaalen Nursing Home. She was born on March 21, 1935, in Madison, Wisconsin, to her parents Alvin and Marie (Jensen) Olson. A proud graduate of East High School in Madison, Class of 1953, Ginny went on to marry the love of her life, James "Red" Hanson, on May 1, 1954. Together, they shared 64 years of marriage before his passing in 2018.
Ginny’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by four of her children and their spouses, Garry (Mary Beth) Hanson of Stoughton, Lynn (Bob) Hanson McAllister of Madison, Steve (Beth) Hanson of Stoughton, and David (Kris) Hanson of Stoughton. She was a devoted grandmother to four grandsons and their spouses, Tylor (Chelsea) Hanson, Dan (Meredith Steel) Heibel, Corey Hanson (Isabella Virrueta), and Max McAllister; great-grandsons, James Conrad Hanson and Lucas Edgar Virrueta Hanson. Ginny is also survived by her siblings, sister Ruth (Rick) Sarbacker and her brother Terry (Barb) Olson. She will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Ginny was preceded in death by her husband, James "Red" Hanson; her son, Scott Hanson (died December 14, 2019); her parents, Alvin and Marie Olson; her brothers Alvin, Richard, and Gary Olson; and her sisters Shirley Dehler and Barbara (Frank) Stanhagen. She was also preceded by her in-laws, Olaf and Marie Hanson, and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
Ginny was known for her creative spirit, Ginny loved sewing, quilting, and crafts. She was also an avid reader and a passionate fan of Wisconsin sports, never missing a chance to cheer for the Badgers football and basketball teams or her beloved Green Bay Packers.
Services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Friday January 9, 2026, at Cress Funeral Home 206 W. Prospect, Stoughton, Wisconsin. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services. Ginny will be laid to rest next to her husband at Riverside Cemetery in Stoughton.
