Virgil Lawrence Broering (Virg) peacefully passed away on November 20, 2025, due to complications from dementia. He was born on October 5, 1942 in Springfield, OH to the late Richard and Ellenora (Brachman) Broering.
Virgil is survived by his wife, Barbara Elizabeth Broering, his son, Ted (Michelle) Broering, grandchildren Samuel Hunter and Sophie Kathryn Broering, and grand dogs Luigi and Tucker. He will also be dearly missed by his sister, Lois (Dan) O’Keefe, sister-in-law Patti Broering, as well as his sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Erik Stephen Von Broering, his brother Oscar, and in-laws Thelma and Cedric Wolter.
Virgil graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in Industrial Engineering. It is there that he met his wife, Barbara Elizabeth Wolter. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in August. Virgil had a successful business career in logistics and, after taking early retirement and moving to Austin, TX, applied those skills to expand and grow his church’s food pantry. Always interested in other people and drawing them into conversation, he was a natural with the patients he worked with during his volunteer duties at St. David’s North Hospital. Virgil was a driven person at both work and play. He loved biking, walking, Tesla cars, volunteering, and helping others. He was the person to talk to when you had questions about investing, car buying, and the latest computer, technology, and transportation advances.
To celebrate Virgil’s love for family, food, and life, a memorial celebration will be held at a later date with details to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to the St Ignatius Martyr Food Pantry, 2303 Euclid Ave, Austin, TX 78704 or to the Alzheimer Day Respite, PO Box 453, Spooner, WI 54801.
The Broering Family extends its sincere thanks to all the family and friends who have been a part of this wonderful ride. To his extended family at Home Again in Waunakee, WI, words can’t express the gratitude we feel towards you. Your love and caring have meant the world to us.
