Vernon Zickert

October 25, 1914 — February 4, 2016

Deerfield - Vernon Ernie Zickert was born on Oct. 25, 1914 on a farm in the Township of Deerfield, the first son of John and Amanda (Zenk) Zickert. He attended Smith School in the Township of Medina. His first job was a hired man on the Walter Holzhueter farm. After marrying Margaret Holzhueter on June 8, 1939, Vernon farmed with his father for four years before buying the farm on Highway 73 in the Township of Deerfield. He loved farming, but he also found time to trap, hunt and fish, and his family always came first. Vernon was involved with the Deerfield Farmers Coop, even served as its director. He was a member of the Deerfield School Board for many years and also a Director of the Kroghville Cemetery for three years. Vernon served as a Director and Treasurer of the Medina Mutual Insurance Company for thirty-five years. Vernon and Margaret opened the Zickert Apple Orchard in the 1950's and Vernon continued working the orchard alone after Margaret's death in 2004.
Survivors include his 5 daughters; LouAnn (Richard) Hoffer of Deerfield, Roxann (Patrick) Sladky of Port St. Lucie, FL., Annola (Tom) Leverenz of Flower Mound, TX., Annita (Jeff) Reimer of Fond du Lac, Sue Benson of Grand Canyon, AZ., 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 1 great-greatgrandchild, step grandchildren, brother Leslie Zickert and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Vernon is preceded in death by his parents, wife Margaret; four bothers, Bill, Alvin, Harold and Raymond; a son Burleigh; and a grandson James Coyle.
A funeral will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday Feb. 9, 2016 at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, 138 County Road BB, Deerfield/Marshall. A visitation will be from 9:00 AM until the service at church on Tuesday. Burial will be in Kroghville Cemetery.
John 11:25-26 Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die."
