MADISON - Vernice Elizabeth Schreier passed away on Sunday, August 30 after a long and wonderful life at age 97. Vernice had been waiting for two and a half years to join her beloved husband, Del, who passed away in February 2013. Vernice was born to Ida (Nelson) and Martin Hellestad in Unity, Wisconsin on March 30, 1918.
She received her B.A. from Northern Iowa University. After marriage in 1943, Del was in service and Vernice was hired by the government to help set up child care centers near the army posts. She was able to go with Del as he was transferred from one camp to another until he was sent to the European theater and then discharged in November 1945.
Vernice and Del raised their son and daughter in Madison. She did some substitute teaching before teaching half day kindergarten at Hoyt, Cherokee and Odana schools. Del and Vernice were members of Bethel Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, belonged to a Circle and worked at the Parish Shop. Faith, family and friends were most important in Vernice's life. In retirement Del and Vernice enjoyed spending winters in Florida or Arizona. The last years were in Fort Myers, Florida. They moved to Heritage Oaks at Oakwood West in 2006 when that building was new.
Vernice was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Del. She is survived by son David in Sunset, South Carolina; daughter Ginny in Waterloo, Ontario; granddaughter Becki and her mother Anne; and niece Jane.
Special thanks go to Senior Helpers, Agrace Hospice, Dr. Watts, Mike and Bev Thom, Hebron staff and friends at Oakwood West.
According to Del and Vernice's wishes, there will be a joint private memorial service at a later date.
Memorials may be made to Oakwood Foundation, Bethel Lutheran Church media ministry or Agrace Hospice.
