Verlyn Kahl

Stoughton- Verlyn Emil Kahl, age 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born in Berry Township on May 23, 1927, the son of Emil and Lavona (Harmening) Kahl. Verlyn enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII and served his country in the Pacific on the U.S.S. O'Brien. On June 4, 1949 he married Evelyn Erickson at Vermont Lutheran Church in Black Earth. Together they farmed in various locations before settling in Stoughton where he retired from farming in 1979. Verlyn worked at the Cottage Grove co-op for 23 years. While working at the co-op local farmers would specifically request his services to spray and fertilize their land. Verlyn finally retired in 2007 from Skaalen Retirement Services where he worked as a maintenance technician. Verlyn was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW. He enjoyed playing cards, dancing, and spending time with his family. Verlyn and Evelyn enjoyed travelling to all 50 states and many countries. Verlyn and his brother-in-law, Bud, flew on the inaugural Badger Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in April 2010. Verlyn and Evelyn enjoyed attending Camp American Legion in Lake Tomahawk for the last three summers. Verlyn and his family were avid sports fans and attended two Rose Bowls, several Packer games, and ten trips to the Daytona 500. He loved animals especially his cat, Molly, who would sit with him in his chair every night. Verlyn is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Evelyn; five devoted children, Terry (friend, Becky), Tom (Debby), Todd (Linda), Trudy (Randy) Smithback and Tricia (Jim) Obrecht; seven grandchildren, Torie (Rob), Theran (Mia), Terra, Ryan, Janna, Rachael and Stephanie; seven great grandchildren, Whitney, Alexis, Lilly, Tommy, Mackenzie, Aida and Wyatt; two sisters, Lurlene Schultz and Geri Schumann; sisters and brothers-in-law, Florence Bingner, Bud (Pat) Erickson, Frank (Lu) Erickson and Sharon Erickson; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Oliver (Frances); and brothers-in-law, Gene Schultz, LaVern Schumann, Charles Bingner, Phil Erickson and Jim Erickson. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, February 11, 2013 at Christ Lutheran Church, 700 County Road B, Stoughton, with Rev. Paula Geister-Jones officiating. Full Military honors will be performed by Stoughton American Legion Post 59. Friends and relatives are invited to a luncheon reception following the services at the Stoughton VFW. Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM, with a Military Pass in Review starting at 4:00 PM, on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Cress Funeral Home in Stoughton. Visitation will also be held from 10:00 AM until the time of services Monday at church. Memorials may be made in Verlyn's name to the WI Chapter of American Parkinson Disease Association, PO Box 7513, Madison, WI, 53707, or to Camp American Legion, 8529 County Road D, Lake Tomahawk, WI 54539. A special thank you to the staffs of St. Mary's Hospital, Stoughton Hospital and Azura Memory Care of Stoughton.
