Velma (Val) Nelson passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2012 while at Agrace Hospice Care Inc. in Fitchburg. Val was born March 4, 1929 to Bryan and Laura (Fridric) Kemp in Crandon, WI. She married Gus Nelson on June 3, 1950 in Seymour, WI.
She and her husband, Gus, owned and operated Nelson's Jewelry in Sun Prairie from 1962-1983.
Val was an active member and volunteer at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sun Prairie. Val took great interest in volunteering. She was a volunteer for Reach for Recovery, providing emotional support for Breast Cancer patients. She was also a volunteer at Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison; here she was able to be close to her passion of flowers and gardening. She served as a greeter and worked in the gift shop for the past 12 years at Olbrich Gardens.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Diane (Michael) Luebke and Connie (Rick) Mertens, grandchildren Meghan, Shelly, and Nick Luebke, Lindsey and Matthew Mertens, brothers, Karl (Kathy), Bryan (Hazel) Vernon (Mary) and Larry. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Gus, parents, 4 sisters, and 2 brothers.
Services will be held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 550 Lincoln Dr., Sun Prairie, Thursday, August 16th at 11:30 am with Reverend Julie Krahn officiating. Visitation will be at the church at 10:30 am up until the time of the service.
The family would like to extend their appreciation and heartfelt thanks to the staff of Meriter Hospital, Agrace Hospice Care center, and to her friends and neighbors who provided excellent and compassionate care for Val.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to: Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Olbrich Botanical Gardens, or Agrace Hospicecare Inc.
