Sun Prairie - USAF Maj. Charles W. Markle Ret., age 87, passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Waunakee Manor. He was born on February 13, 1927 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of Hershel Glenn and Jessie (Broadlick) Markle . Charles graduated from Howe High School and attended Butler University both in Indianapolis, Indiana. He has been a Sun Prairie resident since 1962, prior to that he was stationed in Dayton, Ohio, Okinawa, Rome New York , Thule Greenland and Seville Spain.
Charles proudly served over 24 years as a major in the United States Air force during WWII and the Korean Wars. On April 1, 1949, Charles was united in marriage to Leatrice Smith in Indianapolis, Indiana. On Tuesday, Charles joined her in heaven on what would have been their 65th wedding anniversary. After retiring from the air force, Charles worked for 19 years for the MMSD. He was a member of the Military Officers Association of America, past president of the Southern Wisconsin Chapter of MOAA, member of the Sun Prairie Civic Theatre and most of all he was a faithful member of Sun Prairie United Methodist Church. In his spare time, Charles enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking and singing in two church choirs.
Charles is survived by his three daughters; Teresa (Jim) Hub of Fridley, MN, Melanie (Carl) Galka and Claudia Ketterhagen all of Sun Prairie, daughter of his heart; Jill (Roger) Klubertanz, eight grandchildren; Brian (Carrie) Hub, Adam Hub and Daniel (Kate) Hub, Deja (Aaron) Rasmussen, Chrystal (Eric) Pulvermacher, Amanda (William) Wilson, Jesse (Siera) Ditchuk and Katherine Ketterhagen, and eleven great grandchildren; Samuel, Seth, Elanor, Jonathan, Gracie, Lydia, Eva, Gabe, Kaylie, Trace and Kennedy. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other loving family and friends. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Leatrice in 2006 and his brother, Richard.
Memorial services will be held at SUN PRAIRIE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 702 North Street, Sun Prairie on Monday, April 7, 2014 at 5:30 pm with Pastor Amanda Stein officiating. A visitation will be held at the church on Monday from 4:30 pm until the time of service. Private graveside services will be held at Sun Prairie Memory Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors.
