Urban John Werla, age 95, of Dane, died on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at Agrace Hospice House. He was born on May 31, 1919, in the town of Dane, WI, the son of Thomas and Katherine (Barbian) Werla. Urban served honorably in the United States Army during WWII. He earned many honors including two Purple Hearts. Urban was united in marriage to Margaret Schmitt on Oct. 20, 1956. Urban and Margaret lived and worked on the family farm until January, 2014, when they relocated to a retirement community in Middleton, WI. Urban loved his life as a farmer and took great pride in his farm. He spent most of his life on his farm, living in the house that he was born in until the last months of his life. His happiest work was farming the land and tending his livestock. When he retired from farming he enjoyed employment at a variety of businesses finally retiring from Arlington Agronomy at the age of 90. In Urban's free time, he enjoyed his hobbies of woodworking and making silver rings. Many of his friends and family enjoy the fruits of his labor. In the fall, Urban was often found picking up hickory nuts that were used for baking throughout the winter.
Urban is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret (Schmitt); his daughters, Ann (David) Patek of Oshkosh and Jean (Jeff) Rosemeyer of Dorchester; his grandsons, James (Julia) Patek of London, Ontario, Benjamin Rosemeyer of Bozeman, Montana, Robert (fianc� Bridget) Patek of Milwaukee, and Lucas Rosemeyer of Dorchester. In addition, he is survived by a very special niece, Julie (Greg) Ryan of Davis,IL and their children, Matthew, Bridget, and Hannah along with a special nephew, Kenneth Niesen and his wife, Joyce of Cross Plains. He is further survived by his in-laws, Donna Werla, Eloi and Mary Lou Schmitt, Mary Lou Schmitt (wife of the late Roman Schmitt), and Janet Schmitt; and many nieces nephews and friends. Urban was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Katherine; his sisters, Sr. Antoninious, Olive Adler, Helen Niesen and Katherine Werla; his brother, Tom and Herb; and his in-laws, John Adler, Ray Niesen, Rita Werla, Evelyn and Martin Gilles, Roman Schmitt, Norbert Schmitt, Viola Schmitt, and Louann Schmitt.
Funeral services will be held on Fri. Aug, 8, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Blessed Trinity Parish - St. Michaels. Dane. Rev Chad Droessler will officiate. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 8:30 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will take place in the church cemetery with full military honors.
Urban was well loved in life and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
