Carlton (Carl) Hermann Metzloff

Carlton (Carl) Metzloff of Madison, WI, formerly of Tonawanda, NY, passed away on May 19, 2016, after a long, courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Carl was born August 8, 1931 to Ida H. Flentge and Christian Metzloff. His fond stepfather was Arthur Flentge. He was married to his beloved Elma (Ellie) J. Hardy on June 23, 1956, who survives.

Carl was the loving father of Christian (Tho) Metzloff of Oak Ridge, NC, Kurt Metzloff of Columbus, IN, and Kyle (Elizabeth) Metzloff of Madison, WI. He was the devoted Grandfather of Valerie, Erik, Tyler, Cayley, Laura, and Hunter Metzloff.

He is also survived by many dear nieces and nephews, sister-in- law Phyllis (late Bob Burns and late John Wesolek) and Judith (Dean) Winston. Carl was active in the American Parkinson Disease Association. He loved singing at home and with the West Madison Senior Center Sing-Along group, the West Side Warblers.

The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to Carl's current marvelous caregivers: Assan, Blanka, Darius, Haley, Janessa, Natalie, Nekeya, and Rayanna, who cared for Carl lovingly and diligently to make his life wonderful.

For 34 years Carl was a Professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Science Departments at Erie Community College, Williamsville, NY, where he served as Department Chair for many years. When retired he worked in Admissions. In 1990 he was awarded the honor of Professor Emeritus (State University of NY).

Carl was a graduate of Tonawanda High School, Tonawanda, NY and Erie Community College in Metallurgical Technology. He received his BS and MS in Industrial Arts Education from SUNY College at Buffalo, NY. He was a Key Professor for the Foundry Educational Foundation, which granted numerous scholarships for his students. Carl received the Distinguished Professor Award. He served as Chair of the WNY American Society for Metals (ASM) and the American Foundry Society (AFS) which awarded him the Service Citation. Carl was also active in the WNY Die Casters Association. He was loved by family, students, colleagues, and friends for his personality,warmth, and sense of humor.

During the Korean War Carl served in the 472nd Engineering Aviation Battalion, Company B, as Company Clerk 1951-1953 and was stationed in France.

Carl was an avid pigeon racer and tennis player. He served several successful years as Tennis Coach at Erie Community College. Woodworking was his hobby. For many summers he was a woodshop/hiking counselor at Camp Treetops, Lake Placid, NY. He also taught Art Metal Casting at Artpark, Lewiston, NY, Erie Community College, and Chautauqua Institution, Chautauqua, NY. He was on the Planning and Zoning Board for the City of Tonawanda and an active member of the Historical Society of the Tonawandas.

A lifelong member of Salem UCC of Tonawanda, he was also active at Dale Heights Presbyterian Church of Madison.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Norman (Ruth) Metzloff, Merton (Marjorie) and Robert Yendes and sisters Alene (John) Licht and Ruth (Charles) Pravel.

A Memorial Service will be held at Dale Heights Presbyterian Church, 5501 University Ave., Madison, WI, 53705 on Saturday, May 28, at 11 a.m. Immediately after the service there will be a Military Honors Ceremony and a Dove Release Ceremony. Following that will be the Visitation at Cress Funeral Home, 6021 University Avenue, Madison, WI, 53705, and a Luncheon will be served there from 1 pm to 3 pm.

Following the memorial service honoring Carl's life, there will be Military Honors, and a dove release ceremony. After the services at the church, all friends and family are invited to a visitation and luncheon reception at the Cress Center.
