Gombar, Thomas J. "Tom"
Madison: Thomas J. "Tom" Gombar, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 12, 2015, after a short illness. A bone marrow transplant at UW Hospital had given him almost a decade of quality life following a 2005 Leukemia diagnosis. He appreciated every moment of those years as a great gift.
Tom was the son of John and Louise M. Gombar, born in Kenosha. He was a kind, quiet person with an unexpectedly impish sense of humor. An art historian, he retired in 2007 as Emeritus Curator of Visual Resources at the UW Madison Department of Art History. He interests were wide ranging, including a love of bird watching and bird photography.
Tom is survived by his wife, Linda Duychak; mother, Louise M. (Frederick) Gombar; sister, Jeanne (Gombar) Nelson; and a loving circle of brothers and sisters-in-law, niece and nephews, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his father, John and sister Veronica.
A visitation will be held from 10:00 am until 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 602 Everglade Dr., Madison, WI 53717, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am. Final commendation and burial will take place at 4:00 pm at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Paris Township, WI, 1501 172nd Ave, Union Grove, WI 53182.
To promote graduate research in the art of Netherlands, Germany, and Central Europe from the Medieval through Renaissance and Baroque periods, Tom is establishing a fund with the UW Madison Foundation. Memorials may be made to the UW Foundation for the Gombar Fund. Please share a memory at
