Thomas Consigny

February 11, 1934 — March 30, 2017

MADISON
Thomas Consigny, age 83, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 30, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. Tom was born in Madison on February 11, 1934 to the late Frieda and Harry Consigny.

He is survived by his twin brother, Ned; his brother-in-law, Bruce (Judy) McDowell of Minocqua; and nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Jean (2015); and older brother, Bob of Janesville.

Tom and Jean have three children, David (Linda) with USAID in Honduras, Karen (Kurt) Morris who are both firefighters in Colorado, and Mark (Anita), a VP at US Bank in Madison. They have five beloved grandchildren, Elliot (Emily), Niles, Moriah (Mitch), Cole and Dane; and one great-grandchild, Juniper (daughter of Elliot and Emily).

Tom attended Nakoma Elementary School, West High School (Class of 1952) and earned a B.S. Degree in 1956 and a Law degree in 1959 at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

During his younger years, he was active in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and earned many merit badges by becoming an Eagle Scout. Many fun times were spent at the downtown YMCA and Camp Wakanda enjoying basketball, swimming and boating. At West Hight School, he was a participant in many activities. He became a member of the National Honor Society, earned letters in basketball and track and represented West in 1952 at the State track meet running the 110-meter-high hurdles.

At the UW, he earned B.S. and Law degrees, graduating in 1959. He earned a varsity letter in track, running both high and low hurdles. He became a member of the national Theta Delta Chi social fraternity which resulted in many lifelong friendships.

His passion for music and singing developed while in high school where he sang in the chorus and helped form a boy's quartet. This interest continued at the UW where he sang in several choruses and developed another boy's quartet. Until a few years ago, he was a 19 -year member of the Madison Symphony Chorus - a cherished achievement.

Following graduation, he had several productive law-related job opportunities with Employers Mutual, a real estate oriented law firm in Madison, and doing lobbying work for the Wisconsin Bankers Association. His last 25 years doing law and public affairs work were with Wisconsin Power and Light Co. (WP&L) where he became a VP and Director of Public Affairs. He lobbied both State and Federal legislative bodies. He was always thankful for being employed by WP&L and benefited from many close management friendships.

Tom served on a number of community boards including the West Branch YMCA, the Madison Neighborhood Center and Ridgewood Pool in Orchard Ridge. In the mid-1960's, he was elected and re-elected to two terms on the Madison City Council. He represented the residents of Orchard Ridge, Meadowood and Green Tree.

He and Jean had many common interests especially those involving the outdoors. It could be gardening, birding, high school and college sports, Colorado skiing, Florida gulf water activities on Siesta Key, Northern Wisconsin lake cabin activities for 18 years with family and friends, and countless wonderful years at Nakoma Golf Club.

We'd be remiss not to mention his love for racquetball with friends for many years, his spring trips to Canada for fishing and his many golfing trips with friends to Hilton Head. He and Jean worked closely in the design and finished product of many stained-glass pieces.

Tom and Jean always expressed their appreciation and love of the many close friendships developed over the years with Orchard Ridge residents and the Junction Ridge Condo Association neighbors. The favors and errands done and love expressed by these people and members of Jean's PEO Chapter and Attic Angels will always be wonderful memories. Lastly, their wonderful 14-year old springer spaniel, Anni, will be well cared for.

A visitation will be held at the Attic Angels Community Room located at 8301 Old Sauk Road, Madison on Saturday, April 8, 2017 from 3 pm until 6 pm. A short remembrance service will be held at 4:30 pm.

The family very warmly thanks the caregivers at Senior Helpers and Dr. Jeff Wood of Dean Clinic West for their excellent care. Memorials remembering Tom would be greatly appreciated to Madison Audubon Society, Dane County Humane Society, the PEO Educational Fund or the Theta Delta Chi Educational Foundation.

Please share your memories of Tom.
