Susan Winter

Susan Winter August 20, 1950 - April 17, 2018

During the early morning hours of the 17th of April 2018, Susan J. Winter passed from our lives. Family and friends will attest that she was a kind person you would want as a friend, or as the writer of this obituary knows, a wife. Born in Charleston, West Virginia, Susan graduated from Marshall University. She worked as a Department of Defense civilian while in Germany where she lived for seven years and earned her master's degree. She returned to the United States and worked in student affairs at Wesleyan University, the University of Wisconsin, and Edgewood College. She also served as the manager of the religious education program at the First Unitarian Society in Shorewood Hills. Lastly, she worked at Northwoods Inc of Wisconsin first managing the Homecare Program and later as the Human Resource Manager.

Susan cared deeply about the natural world. She shared her life with pets and she gardened always, even if only in pots sitting in the window of her apartment. She bought a small parcel north of Pardeeville, WI that she named Avalon. At first, she only spent summers there, living in a tent. Then she built a cabin and lived there year-round. A house came later as did her marriage. Her great joy, gardening, flourished at Avalon. A large vegetable garden and extensive flower gardens serve as testament to her great joy. She also believed strongly in the equality of all humankind, especially in the equality of her gender. She, too, believed in the mission of Northwoods Inc of Wisconsin and she would ask that, if you are able, contribute to them. I would ask that you also consider a donation to the Carbone Cancer Center at the University of Wisconsin. Money drives so much, and the mission of each these organizations is so important.

Susan leaves behind friends and family in West Virginia, Ohio, Oregon, and Wisconsin. Her husband remains at Avalon. Please share your memories of Susan.
