Susan Gail Vial, age 67, passed away on May 23, 2025 at Agrace Hospice Care Center in Fitchburg, WI.

She was born in Oak Park, IL on May 8, 1958 to Charles C. and Annette “Toni” (Towle) Vial. She attended Wheaton Central High School in Wheaton, IL, Albion College in Michigan, and Washington University in St. Louis, where she earned her Master of Social Work. She married Dennis Birke on May 26, 1984 in Elmhurst, IL.

Susan was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer three years ago. Since then, she fought her illness with courageous resolve, grace, and a dose of humor. She received exceptional care and support from the SSM Health Cancer Care team, Agrace Hospice, Gilda’s Club Madison, and the UW Carbone Cancer Center’s Pancreas Cancer Task Force. Susan was grateful for the outpouring of prayers, cards, calls, emails, texts, and meals from family, friends, and neighbors.

Susan’s 40-year career focused on fostering healthier families and communities as a healthcare social worker and as a research coordinator at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She was known by her colleagues for her teamwork, accountability, and warmth.

Susan deeply cared for the Madison community. She served as a Lay Minister at the First Unitarian Society of Madison, volunteered at Agrace Hospice, and was a beloved neighbor and friend to many.

Most of all, Susan treasured her family. In addition to Dennis, she is survived by her sons Chris and Peter; her “daughters-in-love”, Kristen and Caroline; her sister, Peggy; and many (grand) nieces and nephews. She was a devoted caregiver for her parents for over ten years. Susan taught her children the values of respect, tolerance, and service.

Susan was loved and respected by the many people whose lives she touched. They will remember her in the flowers they see and show tunes they hear.

A memorial celebration of life will be held at 1 pm at the First Unitarian Society of Madison, 900 University Bay Drive, Madison, on Saturday, August 2, 2025. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Gilda’s Club Madison and the First Unitarian Society of Madison.
