Stephen John Wagner, age 75, passed away peacefully on February 1st, 2026. He was born on August 9, 1950, in Madison, Wisconsin, and was raised on a farm in Waunakee, where he learned the values of hard work, dedication, and integrity that defined his life.
Steve was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Kathy; his parents, Joseph and Bertilla Wagner; his brothers-in-law Robert Herrling, James Herrling, and Ronald Hellenbrand; and his sisters-in-law Judith Herrling (Robert), Lois Herrling (James), Lorraine Herrling (Kenneth), and Barb Wagner (Ronald).
He married Kathy on July 22, 1972, at St. John’s Church in Waunakee, where they were lifelong members. Their marriage was built on love, faith, and a deep partnership that lasted more than five decades.
A skilled carpenter by trade, Steve worked for many years with Sil Maly Builders before starting his own carpentry business. Known for his tireless work ethic, he was rarely standing still—often seen hustling around job sites to make sure everything was done right and done efficiently. He took great pride in his work and in providing for his family.
Steve and Kathy shared a love for antique collecting and spent many weekends together searching for unique treasures, eventually amassing an impressive collection. Steve was also passionate about John Deere tractors and proudly maintained a display room showcasing many cherished John Deere models, reflecting both his farm roots and appreciation for craftsmanship.
Steve is survived by his children, Tammy (Ray Jenkins) and Jason (Janelle) Wagner; and his grandchildren, Dustin Wagner and Clay Jenkins, and Trinity (Luke Hagerty), Rilyn, and Declan Wagner. He is also survived by his siblings, whom he loved dearly: Ronald Wagner (late wife Barb); Jim Wagner (Kris); Carol Dohm (Ken); Duane Wagner; Joe Wagner (Karen); and Debbie Carpenter (Randy); his sister-in-law Judy Hellenbrand; and his brother-in-law Kenneth Herrling. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, whom he cherished.
The family extends a very special and heartfelt thank you to the Agrace Hospice Care team and the staff at Hattie’s Glenn for their exceptional kindness, compassion, and dedicated care over the years. They were truly wonderful to him, and the family is deeply grateful.
Steve will be remembered for his unwavering work ethic, his devotion to family, his love of building and collecting, and the quiet pride he took in a life well lived.
A visitation will be held on Friday, February 13, 2026 from 10:00 am until 11:30 am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 209 South Street, Waunakee, WI 53597 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery.
