Though our hearts are heavy with loss, it is with love, gratitude, and cherished memories that we remember and celebrate the remarkable life of Stanley Toshio Yazawa.
Stan was born September 30, 1942 on the island of Maui, Hawaii to Tomehachi (Tom) and Shizuko Yazawa (nee Miike). During his youth, he was fortunate to live in various locations around the island and then spend his formative high school years at Lahaina Luna High School. There he excelled at football, baseball, and track, as well as serving as student body president. Upon graduation in 1961, Stan took a courageous leap of faith, leaving behind the familiar surroundings of Maui to start a new chapter at the University of Wisconsin- LaCrosse, where he would earn degrees in physical education and English.
Following college, Stan accepted a teaching and coaching position at Denmark High School. What he thought would be a temporary stop in his journey, became his life’s work, 37 years as an English teacher, 32 years coaching football, and 48 years as a wrestling coach. Stan impacted the lives of countless students and athletes, preparing them not just for success in competition, but also in life.
He was known as a gentle, soft-spoken, and patient leader who helped young people develop confidence, discipline, and resilience. Stan’s accomplishments have been recognized with his inductions in the Wisconsin Football Coaches Hall of Fame and the George Martin Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame.
In 1965, Stan married the love of his life and former Lahaina Luna High School classmate, Karen Horiuchi. The couple settled in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and together built a beautiful family and life. Stan and Karen were blessed with two children, Katherine and Steven.
Stan is survived by his wife of 61 years, Karen; his children: Katherine Foster and Steven (Cari); grandchildren: Alexandria Tilley (Darren), Brynna, Makena, Logan, and Lilah Yazawa; siblings Helen Tsugawa (Steve), Melvin (Jennifer), and Lester; and several nieces and nephews. Stan was preceded in death by his parents.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the nurses from SSM Health and the employees of Hattie’s Glen for their compassionate care and support.
Stan will be remembered as a gentle, quiet leader whose kindness has had a profound impact on all who knew him. His legacy will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
