Stan Koenig, 84, of Madison, Wisconsin, passed away on September 17, 2026, after living with Alzheimer’s disease. He was most recently a resident of Oak Park Place.

The son of Harold and Margaret Koenig, Stan grew up in Boscobel and graduated from Boscobel High School. He paused college to serve three years in Frankfurt, Germany, then returned to earn a degree in economics from the University of Wisconsin–Platteville. Stan spent 35 years as a State Farm agent, with an office in the iconic “Old Nakoma Trading Post” on Nakoma Road. He was also involved in West Towne–Middleton Rotary for many years.

Stan and Sharon married in Appleton and celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in August. They raised Bryan and Lisa in Madison. On their honeymoon, Stan took Sharon camping around Lake Michigan, a trip they later repeated with the whole family. They also took a road trip down the coastal 101. Their last big trip together was a cruise through the Panama Canal. There was no one Stan would rather have shared those adventures with than Sharon. He loved to dance despite having two left feet. A polka band played at their wedding, and when he entered memory care, he said one of his goals was to become a better dancer because he knew how much Sharon enjoys dancing.

Stan lived a busy life and made many friends along the way. A kind and gentle man, he was often recognized by his plaid shirts. He was a neighborhood handyman and an avid reader, always looking for ways to make life, food, their home, and their garden better for his family. He was a pilot and a cyclist who rode with a bike club and tackled the Horrible Hilly. To his family’s occasional embarrassment, he was happy to wear his vibrant helmet, full cycling spandex and clicky shoes in front of guests. He also enjoyed a longtime Saturday morning walking and running group, walks in the Arboretum, boating, fishing, annual trips to Florida, and ski trips to Powderhorn.

Some of his happiest times were spent with family. He played hoops with Bryan, attended Bryan’s basketball games and Lisa’s swim meets, and enjoyed camping, campfires, and visits with relatives up north. He taught Bryan and Lisa to play cribbage, Dirty Clubs, and other card games, and never let them win just because they were his kids. And wherever the day took him, Stan set an alarm for 10 p.m. so he would not miss his nightly half cup of ice cream, usually butter pecan.

Stan is survived by his wife, Sharon Koenig; his son, Bryan Koenig; his daughter, Lisa Smith (Conor); his younger brothers, Larry Koenig (Nydia) and Tom Koenig (Linda); and the dog he and Sharon shared, Taffy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Harold Koenig.

A service will be held on Friday, September 25th at 11:00am at Midvale Community Lutheran Church on Tokay Boulevard.

Shortly following the service, family and friends can join us for a celebration of life for light appetizers and drinks at The Seminole in Fitchburg.
