CDR Stanley J. Ewanowski PhD, USN (Ret.) of Shorewood Hills, WI and Tampa, FL passed away on Saturday August 8, 2015 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.
He was born on April 4, 1930 in West Allis, WI to Polish immigrants Stanley and Helen (Neuman) Ewanowski Sr.
Stan was a graduate of the Navel ROTC program at Marquette University where he also received his Bachelor degree. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and retired with 42 years of service and involvement in the military.
Stan graduated from UW Madison in 1962 with advanced degrees, including his PhD. He was fortunate to be hired by that same great University and held appointments in both the College of Letters and Science and the School of Medicine. He taught medical students, interns, residents, and staff in the Medical School and served as Director of the Department of Speech and Language Pathology and was Coordinator of the Inter-disciplinary Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Anomalies Clinic. He served as research advisor to graduate students at the Masters and Doctoral levels. He committed 32 years of his life to UW-Madison.
Upon his retirement in 1993, Stan and his wife Barb moved to Tampa, Florida where he was hired by the University of South Florida and was given a staff appointment to the College of Public Health.
One of Stan's greatest joys was being a volunteer fireman with the Shorewood Hills Fire Department. He especially liked the July 4th festivities. He was also very involved with his civic activities and held leadership roles at Grace Lutheran Church, Tampa, Sons of Norway, Military Officers of America Association as well as many others. He was also an associate member of Midvale Community Lutheran Church when he and Barb came back to Wisconsin in 2015.
Stan is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Barbara, and dog, Olaf. He is also survived by 4 children, Kathryn (Dan) Homblette of Orlando, FL., David (Mayo) Ewanowski of Madison, Karen (Michael) Ewanowski of Minneapolis, and Carolyn (Gary) Pattin of Green Bay. He leaves behind two step daughters, Teri (Jay) Wians of Madison and Sue Schiefelbein of Kansas City. No one can forget his Norwegian son, Paal Skullerud, a special niece, Fran Stemper of West Allis, and cousin Elena Kelpsaite of Kedainiai, Lithuania. Stan had 14 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter and too many other family and friends to count.
Preceding Stan in death are is parents, a brother, four sisters. and son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Anna Ewanowski.
Stan was honored right up to the very end as he was selected as a donor to the prestigious Wisconsin Brain Donor Program at UW-Madison upon his passing.
Memorials to Agrace in Madison, WI or Grace Lutheran Church in Tampa, FL are welcome.
A celebration of Stan's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 17, 2015 at MIDVALE COMMUNITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4329 Tokay Blvd, Madison with the Rev. Katie Baardseth presiding. A visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.
