Sidney Hjortland

Sidney LeRoy Hjortland passed away peacefully, at his home, surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, December 27, 2015. Eighty six years earlier on March 13, 1929, in the same home, he was born to Gundar and Ella (Paulson) Hjortland.

Sidney graduated from Stoughton High School, Class of '47. He married Joan Tofsland on May 24, 1958. He continued to live on the farm and took pride in tobacco crop all his life. Sidney enjoyed his daily coffee with the usual gang at McDonalds, daily drives around the block and never missed a party nor his yearly lap around the Stoughton Fair Midway. He enjoyed his bus trips to the casinos, rounds of golf, card games and watching his sports. He loved spending time with his family whether it was working alongside them or enjoying a celebration.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joan; children, Randy (Angie) Hjortland, Sharon (Donovan) Sveum, and Duane (Tina) Hjortland; grandchildren, Andrew (Nicole), Daniel (Anna) and Samuel Hjortland, Nicholas, Jocelyn, Brandon Sveum, and Lindsey (Ethan) Kovalaske; brother, Gundar (Charla) Hjortland; sister Alice Anderson; mother-in-law Ione Tofsland; brother-in-law, Roger (Melita) Tofsland; also many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Caroline and Orlando Kjernes; father-in-law, Melvin Tofsland; brothers-in-law, Donnie Tofsland, Ron Anderson, and sister-in-law, Rosie Tofsland.

Sidney's family extends special thanks to Dr. Ryan Porter, and the staff of Agrace HospiceCare for their compassion, care and support.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 31, 2015 at Covenant Lutheran Church, 1525 N. Van Buren St., Stoughton with Reverend Jerry Tews officiating. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 from 4 until 7 p.m. at Cress Funeral Home, 206 W. Prospect St., Stoughton and on Thursday one hour prior to service. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery South with a reception to follow at church.
