MADISON
Shirley (Schuring) Ann Tinberg, age 89, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 9, 2024 at St. Mary’s Care Center. Born on November 16, 1934 in Union, IL to the late William and Mary Ann Schuring, Shirley grew up on a farm in Marengo, IL and graduated from high school there in 1952. She married Alvin Tinberg in 1955. Their only child Valerie became the sunshine of Shirley’s life.
In 1976, Shirley and Alvin opened Tinberg’s Grocery and Liquor in Clinton, WI. Shirley managed the store until 1989 and continued working in retail as cashier at Kohl’s Department Store and then Cub Foods/Metcalfe’s in Madison until age 83. Customers and co-workers alike were drawn to her cheerful, caring personality and dedication to hard work. She developed long-time friendships with many, especially James Wilson and Gregory Humphrey. She considered all her friends to be her family.
When she wasn’t working, Shirley loved to crochet, sew, cook and entertain, add to her doll collection, and make things beautiful. She had a deep love of animals, especially dogs – every dog was her friend.
The last 2 years of her life were spent at St. Mary’s Care Center where she appreciated her caregivers and made many special friends. Shirley’s kindness and infectious laugh live on in the memories of those who were blessed to know her.
She will be deeply missed by her daughter Valerie and son-in-law Bob Larson (Oregon, WI), many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, February 16, 2024 at the Cress Center, 6021 University Ave., Madison. A visitation will begin at 11 a.m. until the time of service. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the family.
