Shirley Thorstad

Deerfield- Shirley A. Thorstad, age 80, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 8 2017 at Jefferson Memory Care. She was born in the family home in Rockdale on February 5, 1937, the daughter of Leon and Edna Calder. Shirley graduated from Deerfield High School in 1955. On October 27, 1956 she married Paul Thorstad at Deerfield Lutheran Church. As a young wife and mother Shirley survived a life threatening accident that kept her in the hospital for five months away from her children. Through the generosity of family, friends and neighbors her three children were well cared for, solidifying that it truly takes a village. In addition to being a homemaker, wife, and mother, Shirley worked for GTE, M & A Grocery Store, and in her retirement she worked for a drycleaner. She enjoyed spending time with her husband and family, traveling, dancing and music. Shirley is survived by her husband of 60 years, Paul; three children, Jane (Dan) Kelly, Dan (Kathy), and Rick (Terrie); nine grandchildren, Dana Kelly, Erin Kelly-Ramberg, Megan Meyer, Shannon Kelly, Kara Kelly, Amanda Thorstad, Josh Thorstad, Samantha Thorstad, and Max Thorstad; seven great grandchildren, Makayla Ramberg, Danny Swain, Bella Kelly, Lena Swain, Annie Meyer, Emma Meyer and Hailey Meyer; and brother-in-law, Tim Rideout. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Carol Jean (Eugene) Halverson and June Gullixson Rideout; and brother-in-law, Dave Gullixson. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at Deerfield Lutheran Church, 206 S. Main Street, Deerfield, with Rev. Larry Sexe officiating. Burial will follow in Deerfield Lutheran Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to a luncheon, following the burial, in the church fellowship hall. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of services Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jefferson Memory Care or to the church.
