Shirley Hertzler

March 11, 1927 — February 2, 2014

Madison - Shirley Hertzler went to be with her Lord Sunday February 2, 2014 after a very long and challenging journey. She died in her home with her daughters by her side, as she always hoped she could.
Shirley was born in Kenosha, WI. the daughter of Thomas and Margaret Shelley. She married Simon Hertzler and created a blended family of His, Hers and Theirs. When a career move for Si brought them to Madison, Shirley experienced an awakening of her spirit and a new relationship with God. She became a prayer warrior and continued that aspect of her life through to the very end. Shirley was an example of what strength, perseverance and faith can overcome in life to her family and those that knew and loved her. Her love of family is what kept her on this earth long after the doctors felt she could survive and long after her body had betrayed her. She is so deeply missed, but much of her will live on through her children and grandchildren. Thank you Mom, for everything.
Shirley was preceded in death by her Father and Mother (Thomas and Margaret Shelley), Husband Simon Hertzler, sister June, brothers Thomas and Donald. She is survived by her brother Pat Shelley, devoted son Ronald(Menka) Hayes and daughter Susan(Dan) Atkins, June and Traci (Jamie Greenspan), step-son Ronald Hertzler and step-daughter Susan Yinger. Her much loved Grandchildren; Scott(Linda), Ryan, Collin, Becky, Andy, Jon, step grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Agrace Hospice Home Care Team, Respite Staff, Triage Staff and Chaplin Care for their physical and emotional support for Shirley, June and Traci. Their kind, compassion and loving support sustained the family during the very slow ending of her journey and we will never forget that. June would like to also thank the members of the Clinical Staff Services team (Maribeth Brunsell, Sandy Loss, Suzi Bourie, Ashley Buys, Elizabeth Fritz, Brenda Klahn , Kate Piotrzkowski, Candi Rabe, and Nikki Walker) at Dean for their support and understanding during the last several months.
A memorial service will held at 6:30 PM on Friday February 7, 2014 at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison with her nephew Rev. Dr. Patrick Shelley presiding. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until the time of the service at the funeral home on Friday.
