Sarah Haughwout

Madison - Sarah Jane Campbell Cassidy Haughwout died peacefully at Agrace Hospice on August 22, 2012, at the age of 81, after a long illness.

Sarah Jane was born August 17, 1931 in Lewistown, PA to Dr. Halton Creighton and Christina Janet (Jean) Cassidy who were naturalized citizens originally from Quebec, Canada. Her parents were helped in raising their spirited child by Lydia Peachey of Belleville, PA who remained part of the family until her death in 1987. Sarah Jane's younger brother Thomas Creighton was born 4 years later and the family did much traveling to Lac Louisa in Quebec and to Sanibel Island, Fl where the family had a winter home.

Sarah Jane attended boarding school at Walnut Hill in Natick, MA and then went on to Smith College. Part way through, at age 20, she married Peter Janse Haughwout. They traveled the world and lived in Europe and the South Pacific before ultimately returning to the US so Peter could attend medical school and she could obtain her BS in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. She and Peter had 2 children, Andrew Field and Jean Campbell. After she and Peter divorced, Sarah Jane first lived with the children in Sanibel, but settled back in Lewistown to raise her children with the help of her mother and Lydia. She worked for many years as a substitute teacher for the Mifflin County School District focusing primarily on English and French, and was a dedicated volunteer at the Red Cross and at Lewistown Hospital.

She moved to Madison, WI in 2006 to be closer to her daughter, son in law, and 2 of her 5 grandchildren. She lived at Oakwood Village University Woods and enjoyed volunteering at the store and the many musical activities available there. She made some new friends there in her final years and appreciated their companionship and shared dinners (or just desserts!) at the Village Inn.

In May of 2011, she was diagnosed with cancer and she was remarkably calm in her acceptance. She was able to spend her 80th birthday in her beloved Sanibel, surrounded by many of her family and eating in a restaurant which had originally been the garage of the family's old property!

As her disease progressed hospice became an important part of her weekly routine, along with many helpers on the Oakwood Resident Care Program staff who did much daily work for Sarah Jane. These compassionate people enabled Sarah Jane to stay in her home until her ultimate admission to the beautiful Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg two weeks before her death. The family is very grateful for the thoughtful, respectful care Sarah Jane received from these dedicated professionals.

Sarah Jane is survived by her brother Thomas Creighton, his wife Judy along with their 3 children and 4 grandchildren, her first cousins James Campbell (Sheila) and Robert Campbell (Cynthia) and their children and grandchildren, and by her son, Andrew Field (Katherine Hempstead) and their children Madeline Morrison, John Morrison, and Joseph Andrew and by her daughter Jean Campbell (Jon Keevil) and their children Margo Fraser and Simon Janse.

We will miss her love of chocolate, her irreverence and humor, but she and her stories will live on in us.

Services will be held in celebration of her life on Monday, September 17, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. at Oakwood Village West in the Oaks Community Room, 6225 Mineral Point Road, Madison. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Agrace Hospice, Oakwood or the American Red Cross.
