Stoughton - Ruth Mary Burull, daughter of the late James and Anna Reppen Burull, and sister to Dorothy, Joan, Helen, and Robert, passed away on June 1, 2015 at the Skaalen Home, Stoughton, Wisconsin
Born July 12, 1921, in Stoughton, Ruth lived with her family on Leslie Road, Town of Dunkirk, on the same farm settled by her grandparents, Sorn and Anna Reppen. Ruth was raised on her family's dairy, hog, and tobacco farm; she attended her first-eight school grades at Riverview School. Her mother, Anna Reppen Burull, also attended Riverview, and later taught there. Ruth graduated from Stoughton High School in 1939, and attended Groves Barnhard Business College in Madison.
From business school she took a job with Janesville Wholesale Liquor, then moved to Chicago to work with Arco, a long-distance car hauler for Chevrolet, then worked for many years with contract car hauler, R.L.Beardsley and Co, and managed fifty or more long-distance car haulers and flatbeds.
Following retirement, she fulfilled a life-long dream of becoming an LPN (licensed practical nurse) through attendance at South Holland Technical College (Ill.), then worked at Chicago's St. Mary's Hospital.
Ruth was a founding member of Christ the King Lutheran Church, a mission church, in Chicago's Loop. She was also active in several other "care-giving" activities in downtown Chicago.
In 2000, with the help of her brother Robert, and sister-in-law Jeanne, Ruth moved back to Stoughton, initially staying at Rebecca Manor, Skaalen's assisted living quarters, and then later moving into Skaalen's main facility on Unit #6. There she actively participated in many activities including reading to the residents of the Alzheimer's unit -- Friendship Circle.
Ruth is survived by many nieces and nephews who will always remember her welcoming, warm manner and hospitality. Two of her nieces, Ruth Burull Dreher, and Erica Burull Araneta, remember visiting their Aunt Ruth in Chicago as a special event. They recall that she introduced us to her city, to the joy of visiting museums, eating at fine restaurants, attending Broadway shows, going to her Chicago Loop's Christ the King Church, shopping at Marshall Fields, and spending New Year's Eve together as a family.
Ruth is also survived by her sister, Joan, who lives in Green Bay, and her brother, Robert, who lives with his wife, Jeanne, in Western Wisconsin. Her father, James, mother, Anna, as well as her sisters, Dorothy Jefts, and Helen Splitek, and her brother, John, preceded her in death.
Special thanks on behalf of Ruth M. Burull and her family to all of the Skaalen staff and medical caregivers, especially on Unit # 6 for their non-stop loving care, and encouraging support . When she was active, they made sure she could attend Skaalen's many spiritual occupational and entertainment activities. In her last days they made every effort to insure she was comfortable
and well cared.
Memorial services will be held at the Skaalen Home Chapel at 400 N. Norris St., Stoughton, WI., at 11:a.m., Friday, June 12. Memorials may be made to the Skaalen Home.
