Ronald Arthur Noyce, age 74, passed away following a courageous three year battle with prostate cancer surrounded by his loving family. Ron was born June 4, 1937 to Raymond and Anna (Breingsness) Noyce of Oregon, Wisconsin. He attended Oregon schools until joining the Air Force on Jul 21, 1954. He spent a year in Sado Shima, Japan and the rest of the time at different bases in the United States. He was discharged on April 21, 1958 and returned home to work at American Auto Association (AAA) in Madison. Ron enlisted in the Wisconsin Air National Guard at Truax Field on June 1, 1958, and then joined the Guard full-time in 1959 as a Personnel Staffing Specialist. He retired on December 31, 1995 having achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant.
On August 1, 1959, Ron married Shirley Sumwalt in Richland Center, Wisconsin and they enjoyed over 52 years together. They were blessed with two beautiful children, son David and daughter Rhonda.
Ron was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, American Legion Post #333, and an election official in Sun Prairie. He enjoyed many things after his retirement but most of all he loved spending time watching the activities his grandchildren were involved in. Ron and Shirley spent many years as snowbirds in Port Charlotte, Florida. The friends he made there are numerous and very important to him. Ron loved walking with his Sun Prairie friends logging over 10 miles in a day until health problems shortened that distance to a few times around the block. He made many new friends on his walks as he loved to visit with those he met along the way.
Ron is survived by his wife Shirley of Sun Prairie, son David (Kati) of New Glarus, grandsons Gabe and Sam and granddaughter Hanna of New Glarus. He is further survived by son-in-law Stuart Smith, sisters Mary (Jerry) Long of Edgerton, June (Frank) Cleary of Stoughton/Florida and brothers Don (Millie) of Oregon and Larry (Donna) of Fitchburg, and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
Ron was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Rhonda Sue Smith, his parents Raymond and Anna, brother Dick Noyce, special aunt and uncle Lawrence and Gert Vike, nephew Danny, niece Lori, and his mother and father-in-law Ken and Marguerite Sumwalt. He was loved and will be missed by his family and his many friends.
Funeral services will be held at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 550 Lincoln Drive, Sun Prairie WI on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Dr. David Berggren officiating. A visitation will be held at the Cress Funeral Home, 1310 Emerald Terrace, Sun Prairie on Thursday, May 10, 2012 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM and also at the church on Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Burial will conclude at Sun Prairie Memory Gardens with full military honors.
Ron loved his Agrace Hospice Team, especially Tom, Julie, April, Danielle, Cheryl and all of the wonderful caring people who came into our home. Thank you to Dr. Paul Schmidt for all his care over the years, and Dr. Khuu and Dr. Carapreso for their support through this cancer journey. But most of all, thank you to our wonderful Kati without whom we would have had a difficult time doing this at home.
Memorials can be made in Ron's name to Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Sun Prairie or Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg.
