Roger Steffen

Roger Dean Steffen, 81, of Madison, Wisconsin passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at his home. Roger was born August 9, 1936 in Cedar County, Nebraska to Lawrence and Frances (Beeson) Steffen. Roger faced many hardships throughout his life but persevered through these challenges because of his strong faith in God. He earned his Master of Arts Degree in Behavioral Disabilities from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in January of 1969. He married Mae Agnes Steffen (Kucera) on April 7, 1969. He resided in Madison, Wisconsin raising four children. He was employed as a counselor for the Wisconsin State Department of Vocational Rehabilitation for over 30 years. He then worked for over 25 years at Wolff Kubly Ace Hardware in the Madison area.
Throughout the years, Roger renovated and maintained several houses having knowledge in construction, plumbing and electrical. He took pleasure in helping construct sheds and decks with family and friends. He enjoyed woodworking, especially building furniture and constructing bird houses. He was also an accomplished landscaper and gardener. In his later years Roger enjoyed the company of his special friend Judy. In his free time, Roger was an avid sports fan watching the Brewers, Badgers, Packers, and Cornhuskers, both on television and in person when he could.
Roger is survived by his four children, Mark and Callie (Williams) Steffen, Julie (Steffen) Wilhelmson, Eric and Teresa (Handel) Steffen, and Darian and Sara (Steffen) Hall. In addition, he is survived by his four grandchildren: Jillian and Molly Wilhelmson; and Natalie and Colin Hall. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Loren Steffen; his brother-in-law Gary Richardson and his sister-in-law Bonnie Steffen.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 401 S. Owen Drive, Madison with Msgr. Kenneth J. Fiedler presiding. Family will greet friends, at church, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. A reception will follow.
