Stoughton

Stoughton- Roger A. Knipfer, age 88, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at UW Hospital surrounded by his family.

Son of Woodrow and Ida Knipfer, he was born on October 11, 1934 at his grandparents farm in Barron County, WI.

From an early age Roger was an avid hunter and fisherman, providing meals near the end of the depression.

The family relocated to Westport when he was 10 where Roger continued his outdoor interests, living on the Yahara River.

Roger enlisted in the US Air Force at age 17, serving his country for four years from 1952-1956. Stationed in Rosewell New Mexico Roger was involved with demolition ammunition and even occasionally disarming live atomic weaponry. Upon discharge he returned to Dane County. Roger worked as a masonry and concrete contractor for 46 years. In 1963 he met Barbara Sundby. They were married and settled in Stoughton. They had one son together.

Roger enjoyed many outdoor activities, hunting, fishing, gardening, wildflowers. A guardian of nature he was nurturing to stray and injured animals of all kinds. Roger enjoyed perennial flowers and loved his rose garden, spending hours in the garden usually accompanied by his canine companions who were truly his best friends.

Roger became an accomplished trap shooter, travelling with family to many competitions at the State and National level.

Nearing retirement age Roger purchased a cabin on a small lake in Oneida County where he continued his outdoor pursuits. He particularly enjoyed the sounds of bullfrogs and loons.

Roger loved a flea market, auction, or sale, gathering unique ephemera. In his later years he spent many days cultivating many varieties of prized hostas.

A steward of nature he had bragged about trees he planted throughout his life, numbering in the 1000’s.

Roger will be sadly missed by family and friends, relatives and current buddies Trixie and Lucie. Roger is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barb; son, Paul (Carrie) Knipfer; grandsons, Jesse (Brandy), Jason, and Richard; granddaughters, Ruby, Brooke, Sammy, and Christy; two sisters, Sybil Knipfer and Joey (Tom) Shuga; and large extended family including nieces, nephews, and cousins.
