WIRKA, ROBERT C., passed away September 4, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 5, 1920 in Freeport, Illinois to Joseph and Selena Wirka. Bob was a veteran of WWII where he served in the Army Air Force as a radar mechanic in Italy. He received a Bronze Start for his work establishing radar installation and repair facilities. He also received a Distinguished Unit Citation (equivalent to a Distinguished Service Cross). After the war he gained employment with RR Donnelly & Sons and retired in 1983 after achieving a very successful career as a financial & legal printing salesman.
Bob was a wonderful father who loved his family above all. Always unselfish, he was kind to others, generous, a wonderful host, and had a wonderful singing voice. Bob was an avid reader. He enjoyed curling at the Madison Curling Club in the winter, golfing, and fishing in the summer.
Bob is survived by his wife of 66 years, Helen; children Robert C. Wirka, Jr. (Eileen); Mary Wirka Mantilla (Felix); Nancy Wirka Osterfeld (Mike); and B.J. Wirka Dahlstrom (Brad); ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Other survivors include one sister Margaret Wirka Murray and family and one sister-in-law Virginia Wirka and family
A memorial mass will be held at Our Lady of Queen of Peace 401 S. Owen Dr.
Madison, WI 53711, Saturday at 11:00am with Monsignor Kenneth Fiedler officiating. A reception lunch at the Cress Center, 6021 University Ave., Madison, WI. 53705 to follow. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Agrace Hospice 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway Madison, WI 53711.
