Robert Jones

MADISON - Robert Edwin Jones, 73, of Madison passed away on 18 December 2017 at Agrace Hospice Care in Fitchburg. He was born on July 6, 1944 in Madison, son of Edwin Jones and Dorothy (Robinson) Jones. He attended Edgewood grade school, Oregon High School, and UW Madison for his BA degree after which he served in the US Army in Vietnam. While pursuing a PhD in anthropology at the State University of New York at Binghamton, he met Ellen Rafferty. They were married on June 21, 1980 in Newtown, Connecticut. In 1988 he received a PhD, having completed field research in Kenya and Indonesia. He was a research scientist at the Center for Demography and Ecology at UW-Madison. Robert is survived by his wife Ellen, daughter, Meaghan Rafferty-Jones, brother, Marc Jones (Lois Beck), sister-in-law, Leslie Jones, nieces and nephews, cousins, and many good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Neal Jones.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday December 28, 2017 at ST. MARIA GORETTI CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5313 Flad Ave. Madison. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, followed by a lunch at the church. A visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at the church on Thursday.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the UW Arboretum or the Dane County Humane Society.
