Robert Carter

Madison - Robert J. Carter, age 90, passed away peacefully Monday, May 9, 2016 at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born May 25th, 1925 in Brewer, Maine to the late Alfred T. Carter and Lillian B. Farrington.

He served in the Army Air Force in WWII in the European Theatre. He was a waist and tail gunner on B-17's in the 8th Air Force from England. He also served as a tail gunner on B-26's in the first Tactical Air Force from France. He flew a combined 36 missions.
He graduated from Amherst College with a BA in Economics in the class of 1949. He married Irene Smotrys on September 14, 1952. He was blessed with six grandchildren and was very proud of all their accomplishments. His career involved sales of steel and metals and his last assignment was at Precision Steel Warehouse in Franklin Park, IL. Early in their retirement, Irene and Bob enjoyed traveling throughout Europe. They also enjoyed their summer vacations at Cape Cod with family.

Bob is survived by his wife of 63 years, Irene Carter, four children, Karen (Kurt) Jaehnig; David (Sandy) Carter; Brian (Phyllis) Carter; Pamela (Kirk) Krueger; six grandchildren, Emily, Greg, Christopher, Sarah, Nicole and Kyle; one sister, Olive Reinhalter, many nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Bob was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Vigil and Madeline Turner and his brother, Alfred Carter.

Family and friends may visit at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 5313 Flad Ave, Madison, WI 53711 on Friday, May 13, 2016 from 10am until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11am. Bob will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic Relief Services, charity of your choice, or the St. Maria Goretti Endowment Fund.
