Richard Gill passed away on Monday, January 19, 2026. He was born January 6, 1939, in Madison to Arthur and Clara Gill. He attended Our Lady Queen of Peace School.
After graduating from Edgewood High School, Richard attended the University of Wisconsin. Richard worked at Brown's Book Shop on University Avenue, then at Brown's State & Lake store, where he became acting manager and co-owner. He continued at State & Lake location when Browns was sold to University Bookstore.
Preceded in death are his parents, brother David Gill, and sister Margery Gill.
Richard is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary; son Patrick Gill (Kerry Strupp); grandchildren Madison, Jonathon, and Matthew; brother Donald Gill, and niece Stacy Gill (Cesar) and nephew Andy Gill.
Richard was a man who worked hard and lived with quiet integrity, always sincere in his efforts to help associates, customers, friends, neighbors, and his wider community. Known for his witty and mischievous sense of humor, he brought lightness and laughter to everyday moments. His life was grounded in faith and marked by service to others, offered without expectation or recognition. He found deep joy in walking in nature, was an avid reader with a curious mind, and enjoyed all aspects of photography, capturing beauty in both people and the world around him. Above all, he will be remembered for a life of faith, service, and friends.
Visitation will be on Thursday, January 29, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 401 S. Owen Dr., from 10-11 am. Funeral Mass will be at 11 am.
