Raymond Charles Boehlert, "Chief Ray", age 77, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2015 surrounded by his daughter Renee and family, after fighting cancer for 9 years. Ray, the son of Fredrick and Adeline (Murray), was born December 13, 1937 in Milwaukee, WI. As a teenager, he moved to Ogema, WI, to a family dairy farm where he learned to hunt, trap & fish, developing his lifelong love of the outdoors and firearms. He started his police career as a Beat Patrol Officer for the City of Wauwatosa in 1960 and worked his way up to Detective Sergeant when he was appointed Chief of Police of Sun Prairie in 1972 and served 19 years until his retirement in 1991. He also was the street commissioner from 1979-1981. During his tenure as Chief, he graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA. After retiring, he used his love of wood working while at Famous Fixtures. He continued to enjoy hunting, fishing, firearms and loved spending time with his family; he also was a Benefactor member of the NRA. While battling prostate cancer, he participated in many experimental studies hoping that it would help to someday find a cure.
Ray will be deeply missed by his family including his children and grandchildren Rae Marie (Greg) Boehlert and Joshua, Michelle (Ryan) and Matthew of Marshall, WI; Renee (Timothy) Sagal and Jared of Lodi, WI; Randy (Michelle) Boehlert of Tomahawk, WI and brother Fred (Phyllis) Boehlert of Fond du Lac, WI; his best friend and love of his life Carol Boehlert and her children and grandchildren Laura (Jeff) Veloff and Amy, Mark and Eric; Carla (Randy) Kreger and Justin, Ashley and Hunter and great grandchild Peyton; Mike Grady, Shelly and Samantha and Tyra and many friends and neighbors. Ray was preceded in death by his brother Robert and sister Helen. A funeral service for Ray will be held 3:00pm, Thursday, January 29, 2015 at Cress Funeral Home, 1310 Emerald Terrace in Sun Prairie with Pastor Scott Larson from Lake Wisconsin Church officiating. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Cress Funeral Home, 1310 Emerald Terrace in Sun Prairie from 4:00pm until 7:00pm and also on Thursday from 2:00pm until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the family for a fund to be set up at a later date.
