Phyllis Wittig

September 24, 1924 — March 3, 2017

Stoughton - Phyllis Maxine Wittig, age 92 and a half, of Madison died Friday, March 3, 2017 at the University of Wisconsin Hospital surrounded by family.

She was born September 24, 1924, to Eva (Slater) and Wilkie Collins in the shadow of the Devil's Tower in Wyoming.

On November 7th, 1942 she married the love of her life, George H. Wittig 6 weeks before he was shipped off to fight in World War II. In an era when women stayed home Phyllis bucked that trend and worked full time from until her retirement in 1986. She was a prizewinning blood donor and a former VFW woman's auxiliary member.

She loved her grandchildren, wine, parties, dancing and traveling. She could grow a bountiful garden from sand. Phyllis was twice lucky in love when she met Vernon Ophus in Yuma, AZ 19 years ago. She was so proud to be around to see two great-great-grandsons.

Phyllis was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda; her parents, husband, sister Jenny Hull, brother Bill Collins, mother and father in-law, Flora and Anton, brother and sister in-laws.

She is survived by her daughters, Sandra Sproul (Dennis Schwenn), Bev Collins-Wittig and Deb Wittig (David); grandchildren, Tawny, Steven (Rebecca), Laura (Michael), Chad (Amanda), Melisa (Michael), Kris (Craig), Ben (Amber); great-grandchildren, Abbi, Jillian, Jerry, Ashley, Eliza, Margret, Scarlet, Eva, Cole, Samantha, Chase, Ariel and Bella; great-great-grandchildren, Noah and Eli; and brother, Tom Collins.
