Madison:  Phyllis A. Tschumper, age 79, passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at Meriter Hospital in Madison following a brief illness.  She was born July 18, 1942 in LaCrosse the daughter of Emil and Kathryn (Murphy) Tschumper.  Phyllis married Jerry Krumdick February 27, 1982 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Madison.

Phyllis received her nursing degree from St. Francis School of Nursing in LaCrosse.  After moving to Madison, she was employed as a Registered Nurse at UW Hospital for many years before her State career.  After working for 38 years for the State of Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services, Division of Supportive Living, Bureau of Quality Assurance, Phyllis retired as a Regional Field Operation Director in 2002 receiving a Certificate of Commendation from the Governor. She was noted to be a very passionate, committed nurse and strong advocate for residents in Wisconsin’s long-term care and assisted living facilities to ensure they were safe and received the care and services they richly deserved.  Phyllis could be tough when she needed to be, the ever-present charge nurse, but was also a reliable and supportive friend to her colleagues.  She received the DHFS Exceptional Performance Award in 1997. Phyllis also served for 6 years as a member of the Nursing Home Administrator Examining Board and received another Commendation from the Governor for that service in 1999. After retiring from her full-time position, she stayed on as an LTE in the same department until 2015.

Phyllis was a longtime resident of Madison.  She was an avid Badger and Packer fan and loved watching and analyzing sports with friends and family – she always had 'insider' information.  Phyllis was a devout Catholic with a strong faith and was an active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Madison receiving the St Patrick’s Parish “Parish Layperson of the Year” award for 2005-2006.  She loved her family and many friends and doted on her cocker spaniels Glory and Muffin.  For years she opened up her home and hosted Thanksgiving, Easter and/or Christmas for her extended family and loved having everyone around her.  If you knew Phyllis, you knew that she was a generous person who supported friends and acquaintances without hesitation or judgement, often anonymously.  Phyllis was very active in many groups, including the Waunona Neighborhood Association and more recently the Settler Hill Condominium Association.

Phyllis is survived by her sister, Sharon Yehle (Jerry), nephews; Bart Tschumper (Connie), Bret Tschumper (Ronda), Jim Yehle (Jessica), nieces; Brenda Tschumper, Laurie Tschumper, Bobbi Tschumper, and Ann Yehle.  She is further survived by many great and great- great nieces and nephews who could always count on some new socks and spending money for Christmas.   Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband Jerry Krumdick, brother Jerry Tschumper (Carol), and a niece Leah Tschumper.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Sunday, July 24th at the Cress Center, 6021 University Ave., Madison, WI  53705, with visitation from 11:00 am until the time of service.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial donation in Phyllis’s name to a charity of your choice.

The family wishes to give special thanks to the care team on the Meriter Heart and Vascular floor for their kind and compassionate care during Phyllis’s last few weeks.  The family is also grateful to Dr. Sarina Schrager, Dr. Patrick Dowling, and Amanda Meyer, PA, for their outstanding care over the years. And finally a special thank you to her nephew's wife, Jess Yehle, for her tireless advocacy, support and care of Phyllis for many years.
