Obituary

Philip (Phil) Edward Albert, age 77, of Madison, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 15, 2026.

Phil was born on June 1, 1948, in Madison, Wisconsin, and lived a life defined by love for his family, service to his community, and deep pride in the places he called home.

Phil attended Our Lady Queen of Peace School, Edgewood High School, and went on to study at the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Business. Shortly after graduation, he married his wife and lifelong companion, Pauli R. Albert (Toltzien), on February 2, 1973, sharing a life full of love and partnership. They celebrated 53 wonderful years together just weeks before his passing.

An entrepreneur at heart, Phil owned several businesses in the Madison area throughout his life, with especially fond memories of owning the Red Shed in the 1970s. He dedicated more than 30 years of his career to the State of Wisconsin, serving within the Department of Revenue and the Department of Commerce. In his many leadership roles, Phil found great fulfillment in supporting the growth of the state and building strong relationships with colleagues he deeply valued.

Following retirement, Phil and Pauli enjoyed life together in northern Wisconsin on Squirrel Lake in Minocqua — a place that became the heart of many treasured family memories. Even in retirement, Phil remained committed to service, contributing his time and talents to organizations supporting Oneida County and the Minocqua community.

Family was the center of Phil’s life. He was a devoted husband, a proud and supportive father, and an incredible “Papa.” He loved coaching his children’s sports teams, guiding them through life, and always being there when they needed him. He cherished every moment with his grandchildren — whether celebrating holidays, cheering at their sporting events, or spending days together outdoors and on the water up north. His presence, encouragement, and love will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Phil enjoyed spending time with family and friends, building and working with his hands, golfing, fishing, reading, and being outdoors — especially on the lake.

Phil is survived by his loving wife, Pauli R. Albert (Toltzien); his three children, Lisa (Jed) Sanborn, Brian (Meghann) Albert, and Katie (Chad) Rhodes; and his seven cherished grandchildren, Allison, Jenna, and Jack Albert; Annika and Jake Sanborn; and Ayden and Asher Rhodes. He also leaves his sister, Janet (Michael) Pawelski, and his sister-in-law, Ann Albert, widow of John Albert.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip F. Albert and Rita C. Albert (Griffith); his brothers, John C. Albert and David Albert; and his in-laws, Paul R. Toltzien and Josephine E. Toltzien (Kennedy).

A visitation and funeral service will be held on Friday, February 27, 2026, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, 401 S. Owen Drive, Madison, Wisconsin. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will be held afterward.

The family would like to express their immense gratitude to the Azura & Agrace Hospice team for their compassionate care and support over the past several months, and especially during Phil’s final days. Their guidance, kindness, and dedication provided comfort to our family during this difficult time, and we are deeply appreciative.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Phil’s name to Agrace HospiceCare, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711, or online at Donate.

Please share your memories of Phil by posting here in his guestbook.
