Peter G. Lewis passed away on December 16, 2024 at his home in Madison WI. He was born in Washington DC on June 6, 1953, the 9th anniversary of D-Day. Perhaps due to these circumstances, he held a life-long passion for politics and American history, which led to a career in the Democratic party. After studying Agricultural Journalism at the University of Wisconsin, he ran for State Assembly in 1984, 1986, and 1988, campaigning on a platform of better representation for the district residents of farmers, small business owners and families. He ran his campaigns and volunteered as a certified emergency medical technician on the Barneveld Rescue Squad with his wife Ann (Teeters), whom he married August 10, 1985. Later, he worked as the Constituent Relations and Policy Analyst for Senator Herb Kohl in the Madison office. Peter decided to reinvent himself in 1999 and became a registered land surveyor, serving as the Chair of the Legislative Committee of the Wisconsin Society of Land Surveyors from 2014-2020.
The true highlight of his life was sharing his passion for the great outdoors with his children, Abigail and Alexander, through countless canoeing and camping trips, horsepacking adventures, and unforgettable ski trips to Colorado. He faithfully served his Wednesday night shifts on the Ski Patrol at Devil’s Head Ski Resort for three decades.
Peter will be remembered for his empathy for troubled souls, in particular juvenile delinquents and feisty horses. His eloquent political commentary and his “handy-man” abilities are already sorely missed. He is survived by his children Abigail and Alexander, siblings Eric, Sarah, and Dustin, niece Martha and nephew Adam, and his cherished “tribe” of extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Martha (Wells). A memorial service will be held June 7, 2025 at the family farm. If you feel so inclined, please donate to the ACLU in his memory.
