Obituary

Pauli Roberta Albert (Toltzien), age 75, of Madison, Wisconsin, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 6, 2026.

Pauli was born on April 27, 1950, in Madison, Wisconsin. She was the heart of her family, kind, loving and always putting others first. As the matriarch of her family, she was fiercely independent, a natural caretaker and known for her kindness and sweet spirit, creating a home filled with love.

Pauli attended West High School and went on to graduate in 1970 from the University of Wisconsin Medical School – University Hospitals with a degree in Radiologic Technology. Shortly after graduation, she married her husband, Philip Edward Albert, beginning a beautiful love story that spanned 53 years. Pauli passed away just three short weeks after Phil. It brings comfort to her family to imagine Pauli and Phil together again, reunited in the deep and enduring love they shared throughout their lives.

Pauli worked as a Radiologic Technologist, where she was known for her kindness, strong work ethic and the care she showed her patients. She spent over 20 years at UW Sports Medicine Clinic, where she built lasting friendships with her colleagues.

Pauli enjoyed knitting, quilting, reading, golfing, playing games & puzzles and spending time outdoors at the lake. She loved sharing these moments with family and friends, where her kindness made time together feel easy, fun and full of laughter.

After retirement, Pauli and Phil split their time between northern Wisconsin, Madison, and winters in Florida with friends. She loved traveling with friends, volunteering at the Minocqua Public Library, golfing, and most importantly, spending time with her family.

Family was the center of Pauli’s world. She was a devoted and loving mother, always supporting her children through every stage of life. She was an incredibly proud and adoring grandmother who treasured every moment with her seven grandchildren, from babysitting and holidays to cheering them on at sporting events and spending time together at the lake. Watching them grow brought her immense joy.

Pauli is survived by her three children, Lisa (Jed) Sanborn, Brian (Meghann) Albert, and Katie (Chad) Rhodes; and her seven cherished grandchildren, Allison, Jenna, and Jack Albert; Annika and Jake Sanborn; and Ayden and Asher Rhodes. She is also survived by her brothers, Tommy (Choopit) Toltzien and Steve (Paula) Toltzien.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Philip Edward Albert; her parents, Paul R. Toltzien and Josephine E. Toltzien (Kennedy); and her in-laws, Philip F. Albert and Rita C. Albert (Griffith).

A visitation and service will be held on Friday, April 24, 2026, at the Cress Center, 6021 University Avenue, Madison, Wisconsin. Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m., with the service to follow at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow in celebration of Pauli’s life and her birthday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Pauli’s name to the American Parkinson Disease Association, Wisconsin Chapter.
