Nancy Lemkuhl

May 16, 1924 — February 7, 2023

Madison

Nancy Breithaupt Lemkuhl died on Tuesday, February 7th after a short illness. Nancy was born
to Frederic and Hazel (Lanpheer) Breithaupt in 1924. She was raised in Milwaukee and
attended Ward Belmont and Lawrence University graduating with a degree in Music. She
taught music for a short time in Michigan before returning home to Milwaukee. She married
Marvin Lemkuhl in 1952. Together they made a home in Bayside, WI and raised their two
children, Katherine and Tod there. Nancy enjoyed entertaining, playing golf and bridge. She
was a gifted knitter, crafter, and gardener. They attended North Shore Congregational Church
in Fox Point, WI.
In 1975, she and Marvin moved to Venice Florida, to accommodate Marvin’s love of golf. There
they quickly developed a group of friends and kept busy playing golf, attending/hosting
cocktail/dinner parties, and bridge parties. They traveled to Europe and the Galapagos Islands.
Marvin passed away in 1997 and mom returned to Mequon, Wisconsin in 2000 to be closer to
family. She quickly reconnected with old friends, bridge groups and the like. She volunteered
for a while at a local grade school.
In 2015, after a short illness, mom moved to Madison to live with Kathy and son-in-law (Tom)
and continued to play bridge and knit at the local senior center. She traveled to WA a few times
a year for visits with Tod and his wife, Gerie.
In spring 2019 when Katherine and Tom moved to Colorado, Nancy moved there with them and
joined in on neighborhood social events. When Tom became seriously ill in the fall of 2019,
Nancy moved to Washington state to live with her son Tod (Gerie) and grew closer to their
friends and family members.
Nancy stayed in Washington until May 2022, when she moved into Oakwood Village Assisted
Living in Madison WI, a facility close to her daughter who had returned to Madison the prior year
after the death of her husband. At Oakwood she made several friends and was reunited with a
resident who had lived with her on the same block in Milwaukee as a child. A wonderful reunion
for both women.
Mom was predeceased by her husband Marvin and brother-in-law Earl Vogt. She is survived by
daughter Katherine, son Tod (Gerie), her sister Carol (Vogt), nieces Nancy Vogt and Ann John,
nephews Fred Vogt (Jennifer), Tom Vogt (Lisa), their children, and grandchildren.
There will be no formal service. A gravesite gathering for family is being planned for the spring
for the interment of the ashes followed by a celebration of life luncheon.

We welcome you to share your memories here on Nancy's tribute wall.
