Mona Hoveland-Schoenicker

Stoughton/McFarland- Mona Christine Hoveland, age 101, of Stoughton, passed away on Monday, October 8, 2012 at the Skaalen Home. She was born on February 11, 1911, in Stoughton, a daughter of the late Gustave and Rena (Gullickson) Hellickson. Mona graduated from Stoughton High School in 1929 and was an honor student all four years.

Following graduation, Mona moved to Milwaukee where she met and married John Schoenecker on December 8, 1934. John was a Supervising Foreman-toll, Plant Department of the Wisconsin Bell Telephone Company. Together the couple had four children, Paul, John, Barbara and Steven. Her husband, John, died in 1957. Mona worked for the Brookfield School District and, in the early 1960's, for the Kohl brother's grocery corporation main office in Wauwatosa.

In October, 1966, Mona married Atwood Hoveland. The couple lived on Lake Kegonsa in McFarland for 30 years. Mona and Atwood enjoyed dancing, golf and winters in Las Vegas. Following Atwood's death in 1996, Mona moved to Stoughton. Mona was a member of the West Koshkonong Lutheran Church. She was also a long-time member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Stoughton Country Club, and a member of the Sons of Norway. She was also a member of and enjoyed trips with the Stoughton "Weekenders." Mona had a good sense of humor and made many friends throughout her life.

Mona is survived by her sons, Paul Schoenecker of Minocqua and John (Kathy) Schoenecker of Carbondale, CO; her daughter, Barbara (Robert) Larson of McFarland; nine grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. Mona was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; a son, Steven Schoenecker; her second husband; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Schoenecker; three brothers, Clarence Moen, Adrian and Roland Hellickson; and two sisters, Odilate Gilbert and Marjorie Swalheim; two grandsons, Scott Schoenecker and Jeremy Schoenecker (infant); and a very special sister-in-law, Carol Hellickson.


Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at Skaalen Home Chapel, 400 N. Morris Street, Stoughton, with Rev. James Koza and Rev. Richard Dowling officiating. Friends and relatives are invited to a luncheon, immediately following the services, in the Friendship Room. Friends may greet the family from 10:00 AM until the time of services Thursday.

A special thank you to the staff of Unit 1, River Walk,at Skaalen Home for the loving care given our mother. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Skaalen Home or the West Koshkonong Lutheran Church.
