Mildred Shain

April 21, 1927 — October 25, 2015

MADISON, WI - Mildred Ruth Shain (Millie), 88, passed away on October 25, 2015, of natural causes at Attic Angels surrounded by her family. Millie was born in Boise, Idaho on April 21, 1927, and attended the University of Washington in Seattle, where she met and married her husband of 68 years, Irving Shain.

They moved to Madison, WI, where Millie raised four wonderful children, while actively teaching Montessori School, volunteering with several organizations, including the Madison Weaver's Guild and serving as an angel at Attic Angels. A lifelong learner, she also found time to take courses at UW-Madison and work on the Helen Allen Textile Collection.

But by far her most active role was supporting the many obligations at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, where for 35 years her husband served on the faculty and spent the last 10 years (1977 - 1987) as Chancellor. She was a gracious host to thousands of visitors to the Olin House, the official residence of the Chancellor. She enjoyed the interaction with both faculty and students - and cheered loudly at many Badger sporting events. Millie especially enjoyed music, attending many concerts over the years. Classical music was always playing when she was in a room. She loved to travel, and spent considerable time in Europe.

She is survived by her husband, Irv, and her four children, Kathy Shain (Mark Walsh), Steve Shain (Roxanne), John Shain (Leslie) and Paul Shain (Suzy). In addition, she is survived by three wonderful grandchildren, Nathan Shain (Angel), Isabel Shain, and William Shain.

A memorial gathering to celebrate her life will be held on October 30, 2015 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Community Room at Attic Angels, 8301 Old Sauk Rd, Middleton, WI 53562. At her request, a private service will be held for family only. Memorial donations can be made to the University of Wisconsin Foundation 1848 University Avenue, Madison WI 53726 to support the Beethoven Piano Competition in the School of Music - which Irv and Millie have sponsored for many years.

Special thanks to the caregivers at Attic Angels, to Dr. Dennis Maki, and to Sharon Borland, who was a special friend and caregiver to Millie over the last year. Sharon's compassion and friendship are cherished by the entire family.
