Michael D. Matheson, age 68, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at his home in Wisconsin Dells.
He was born in Stoughton, WI on May 25, 1955, son of Richard “Dick” and Phyllis (Gullickson) Matheson.
He married his best friend and soulmate, Connie (Houser) in Madison on May 21, 1977 before settling in Sun Prairie, WI. Mike and Connie’s love for each other was extraordinary and unwavering. He missed her profoundly after she passed away in February, 2015.
Mike was an incredibly devoted father who could not have been more proud of his children. He especially loved watching Alex play professional football and Brianna carry on Connie’s legacy with a career in healthcare.
After graduating from Deerfield High School in 1973, he earned a degree in Accounting from Madison Area Technical College. Mike worked in local government and the hardware industry before his career as an independent piano tuner.
Mike was a funny, kind, and generous man who was loved deeply throughout the communities of Sun Prairie, Deerfield, Madison, Wisconsin Dells, and surrounding areas. He was known to many as a long-time member of the Oak Park Band, piano tuner, youth sports coach, local theater star, church choir director, and karaoke phenomenon.
Mike is survived by his children, Brianna (Ross) and Alexander; sister Judy, children David, Matthew, Shanda; brother Rick (JoAnn), children Tammy, Todd, Rich, Angie, Jennie; sister Linda, children Kelly, Kari; sister Ann (Chuck) children Justin, Jon, Max, Jessica, Brittany, Mitchell; sister-in-law Marlene, children Lucas, Trevor, Dontay; sister-in-law Terrie (Rick), children Samantha, Maxwell; and many cousins, in-laws, and great nieces/ nephews.
Mike was preceded in death by his wife Connie, parents Dick and Phyllis, parents-in-law Ron and Mary Ellen, brother-in-law Bill Fish, brother-in-law Steve Houser, and nephew Kristopher Hansen.
Visitation will be from 4-7:00 PM on Monday, May 6, 2024 at Cress Funeral Home, 1310 Emerald Terrace, Sun Prairie, WI 53590. Visitation will continue from 9:30-11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at Bristol Lutheran Church, 6835 County Hwy N, Sun Prairie, WI 53590 with a Funeral Service to follow at 11:00 AM with Pastor Tim Knipfer officiating. Mike will be brought to his final place of rest at Bristol Lutheran Cemetery on the church grounds following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Connie M. Matheson Memorial Scholarship for for Medical Assistant students at Madison College (MATC) or to your favorite youth program for music, sports, or theatre. In memory of Mike and Connie, the family encourages everyone to consider registering as an organ, eye, and tissue donor and to discuss those wishes with your legal next of kin.
The family wishes to express a special thank you to Alex’s teammates and colleagues with the St. Louis Battlehawks, Brianna’s colleagues at UW Health, and Mike’s friends and neighbors at Christmas Mountain.
